a great acronym to remember them by is:
Eat A Darn Good Breakfast Everyday
assuming you are playing right-handed,
when you put your left hand on the fretboard/fingerboard
it will create different notes from the musical alphabet (see lesson 1: Musical Alphabet)
so the 1st fret on the E string will yield the note F, the 2nd fret will be F# (also known as Gb), the 3rd fret will be G,
4th fret will be G# (or Ab), 5th fret will be A …etc…etc…
