lesson 7: essentials for the 1st 6 months!

Posted: September 14, 2008 in lesson 7: the essentials for 1st 6 months!

here’s a checklist for you to know in your 1st 6 months:

chords:  C A G E D major, minor, and dominant

play the major scale in 5 positions

understand and be able to produce some arpeggios

transfer the chords with barre chords and understand how to play any major, minor, or dominant chord.

all of this, you can find how to do on another one of my sites here

so far on THIS blog, we’ve got some basic bases covered.

so, there are billions of directions you can go….But, there are other things to cover that are important.

but let me say that, at this point, do yourself a favor, and don’t get ahead of yourself.

what i mean is, don’t let your knowledge exceed your abilities.  who cares if you know how to play guitar…the real thing is actually being able to play the guitar!  so practice practice practice, until your hands catch up with your mind!  otherwise you’ll get confused…it will take some time.  but just be consistent: practice 10 minutes per day – ideally when you wake up and before you go to bed.  don’t worry that practice time will grow on it’s own if you’re doing it right and enjoying it.  and you will think of it as fun, not practice ;)  your hands need to catch up and start getting used to the patterns, it will ease your mind, literally.

with that being said, keep practicing the Major Chords: C A G E and D.  and the Major Scale…so far you’ve got 2 or 3 patterns so far that we’ve covered (with that YouTube video in lesson 6).  so continue to practice those chords.  then learn to Transfer those chords

5 Major chords: C A G E D

how bout some basic chord theory — here’s my written instruction

here’s another guy on video talking about the same thing….

TIme to play!!!!! — watch this great video review of the Major Chords and other stuff, with a couple Minor Chords mixed in and play along – it should be somewhat of a review

DID you Learn How to TRANSFER those chords???

then i would suggest doing the following Minor Chords:

5 Minor chords: C A G E D: that’s me teaching Minor Chords

then we are onto

5 Dominant chords: C A G E D

here’s another guy teaching about the music theory behind the dominant

he’s using the 4th pattern of the A major scale to teach you the theory behind it, so make sure you are familiar with this pattern of the A major scale – along with the other 4 patterns, so, you’ve got 5 patterns of the major scale that you should be familiar with AND memorize!!!! trust me, it’s worth it though, because these 5 patterns, once memorized will also be the same patterns for literally hundreds of scales, but all you had to do was memorize 5!!!! i’m telling you, this is why this is guitar demystified, i went for years not being able to connect these dots, finally at M.I. i learned how and was like, “why doesn’t everyone know this right off the bat???” it makes life sooo much easier…so please learn this patterns, memorize these patterns and you will be so far ahead of the game!
